There are two types of object, direct and indirect.
I write a letter( escribo una carta) what I write is a letter so it's a direct object, in Spanish we can omit the noun and put a pronoun, " Lo" when the replaced noun is male and singular)/ "La" ( female and sing)/
"Los"(male plural) / " Las" ( female plural).
So:
*Escribo un libro- lo escribo.
* Escribo unos libros- los escribo
*Escribo una carta- la escribo
*Escribo unas cartas- Las escribo.
Now, if we also say to whom I write those books/ letters I use the indirect pronoun. In Spanish, this indirect pronoun has two ways:
"Le" for male and female sing nouns
"Les" for male and female plural nouns.
Compro una casa a mi hija. Le compro una casa.
"Le" replaces "a mi hija".
You can also say " Le compro una casa a mi hija" to emphasize it.
I buy a house to my parents- Les compro una casa( a mis padres).
In your examples:
Luisa lo mató... Lo matado, the object who was killed is a direct pronoun so we use "lo" (Luisa killed a man) / If Luisa killed a woman, we'd say "Luisa la mató".
But Luisa taught her Luisa le enseñó ( something, a lesson, a rule,...) so we use " Le" because it's an indirect pronoun.
Al is dit niet een onderwerp direct voor beginners, maar in het Spaans hoor je toch heel veel het woordje LO. Lo = Het.
Voorbeelden:
Lo siento - Het spijt me
Lo mismo - Het zelfde
Lo entiendo - Ik begrijp het.
Lo he visto - Ik heb hem/het gezien.
Lo puedo - Ik kan het.

Ik zie een boom - Veo un árbol
Wat zie Ik? Een boom.
Árbol is mnl enkelvoud (El árbol), Dus wordt het lo.
Lo veo - Ik zie het.
Als je nu een bloem (una flor) ziet.
Flor is vrw enkelvoud. Dus wordt het la.
La veo - Ik zie het.
La en Lo is Het.
Ook moeite met le la las les se? Troost je, zelfs Spanjaarden hebben er moeite mee.
